Update: The Malawi Under-20 women's national football team, the Young Scorchers, suffered a 2-0 defeat to Nigeria's Falconets in the first leg of the final qualifying round for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, according to Vanguard News. The match took place on Saturday in Ikenne-Remo, Nigeria. The Nigerian squad maintained heavy pressure throughout the match, though Malawian goalkeeper Emily Nkhwazi was credited with keeping the scoreline manageable despite the loss. The Young Scorchers will now prepare for the return leg, which is scheduled for May 9 at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, The Sun Nigeria reports.

Update: In netball, the Malawi Under-23 national team, known as the Queens Cubs, continued their strong run in South Africa's Telkom Netball League Division Two with a 76-26 victory over the Northern Cape Diamonds and a 58-39 win against the Mpumalanga Sunbirds, SuperSport reports. However, despite their win record, the team cannot be crowned league champions. Netball Association of Malawi general secretary Yamikani Khungwa Kauma told Nation Online that because the Queens Cubs are participating strictly as an invitational guest side, tournament regulations stipulate that the official title must go to the highest-placed South African team.
