SADC Advances Regional Food Security Pact and DRC Trade Integration as Malawi Strengthens Ties with Japan

Saturday, May 2, 2026

Malawi and Japan have moved to strengthen bilateral ties by expanding cooperation in workforce skills development. According to a May 1 report in The Daily Times, the partnership was highlighted during national Labour Day observations. The initiative aims to improve local workforce capabilities and support ongoing economic development.

On the regional front, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has renewed its Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). According to an April 30 statement from SADC, the new agreement focuses on improving food security and climate resilience across the region, which directly impacts Malawi. SADC Executive Secretary Elias Magosi and WFP Regional Director Eric Perdison signed the agreement, replacing a previous framework that expired in 2024. The renewed partnership specifically targets youth participation in agricultural value chains and climate adaptation planning.

Regional trade diplomacy also advanced as SADC concluded high-level meetings in Kinshasa to support the Democratic Republic of Congo's formal accession to the SADC Free Trade Area. An April 30 SADC release noted that the meetings focused on aligning the DRC with essential regional legal frameworks, such as the SADC Protocol on Trade. SADC Deputy Executive Secretary for Regional Integration Angèle Makombo N'Tumba stated that the integration will improve market access and trade facilitation for all member states.
