The Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) led the nation's World Book and Copyright Day commemorations at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe, urging the public to respect intellectual property and support local artists, according to Just Malawi Music. The event, held on May 1, was presided over by Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Alfred Gangata. During his address, Gangata stated that the protection of copyright ensures artists are rewarded for their efforts, which encourages continued innovation. Cosoma Public Relations Officer Catherine Mitungwi Chiumia added that copyright protection extends beyond music to books and other literary works, requiring respect from all consumers.

During the commemorations, a coalition of Malawian creatives, including musicians, filmmakers, writers, and poets, demanded stronger systems to protect their work from illegal distribution, Just Malawi Music reports. Film Association of Malawi Secretary General Ignatius Scott Kaphinde noted that while the creative industry is growing, digital piracy remains a major challenge. In response to the concerns, Cosoma Executive Director Dora Makwinja assured artists that the organisation will not relent in its efforts to promote copyright awareness and safeguard their content.

In digital entertainment news, several local artists dropped new tracks this week. According to the Malawian music platform Amati Zambiri, the latest singles released on May 3 include "The Way You Are" by Cizo, "Undiuze" by Jay Kay Be featuring Malawi Phiri, and "Kwatire" by StashLey.
