UNAIDS Warns 37,000 HIV Injectable Vials Risk Expiration in Malawi

Monday, May 4, 2026

Malawi's public health sector is facing critical medication distribution challenges as the ongoing withdrawal of foreign aid disrupts local medical services. According to UNAIDS, 37,000 vials of long-acting HIV injectables are at risk of expiring in May 2026.

The organization notes that a shortage of active implementing partners, triggered by United States funding cuts, risks generating insufficient client loads to administer the treatments before their expiration date.
