The Zomba Lions Sight First Eye Hospital is undergoing major renovations funded by a $219,325 grant from the Lions Clubs International Foundation to preserve essential ophthalmic services for southern Malawi, according to Lion Magazine. The facility serves a population of more than four million people and had recently suffered severe structural damage. Termite infestations and extreme weather, including the effects of Cyclone Freddy in 2023, left the hospital roof at risk of collapse and threatened its ability to provide care.

The ongoing project includes a full roof replacement, plumbing and electrical upgrades, and the installation of new diagnostic and surgical equipment. Since the repair efforts began, the hospital has maintained operations, delivering more than 20,000 outpatient consultations and performing over 2,300 cataract surgeries. The new equipment will also allow medical staff to expand treatments for glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

In addition to the physical upgrades, local health workers and Lions Club members are expanding community outreach programs to detect eye conditions early. Recent initiatives include district-wide vision screenings and a public education event at the University of Malawi focused on the link between diabetes and vision loss. These campaigns aim to make eye care accessible to rural residents who cannot easily travel to the Zomba hospital for preventative care.
