Political tensions have affected preparations for this year's Kamuzu Day commemorations, prompting the Malawi Congress Party to organise separate prayers, according to Nyasa Times. MCP Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda announced the decision after former president Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera was excluded from the official national programme. In response to the friction, event organisers and Kamuzu family representative Ken Kandodo have appealed to the public to set politics aside and wear neutral attire for the May 14 national holiday.

Update: The High Court in Lilongwe has blocked an attempt by the Malawi Congress Party to remove its Bwaila Constituency chairperson, Frackson Chitheka Banda. Nyasa Times reports that the court granted an injunction against MCP Central Region Governor Patrick Zebron Chilondola, restraining the party from endorsing the suspension. The ruling prevents the party from recognising the decision until a full hearing takes place.

Update: The government has secured a legal victory in its effort to relocate the Malawi Electoral Commission headquarters from Lilongwe to Blantyre. As reported by Nyasa Times, Judge Kenyatta Nyirenda dismissed an application by three citizens seeking to block President Peter Mutharika's relocation directive. The Office of the Attorney General successfully argued that the applicants lacked the required legal standing, ending the immediate legal hurdle for the move.

The government is facing criticism over executive compensation practices across State-owned enterprises following the September 2025 General Election. According to Nyasa Times, several parastatals are currently paying full contractual benefits to former chief executive officers while simultaneously compensating newly appointed executives for the same positions. Critics have stated that these parallel payrolls contradict the administration's commitment to austerity measures and expenditure controls.
