Malawi’s Anti-Corruption Bureau has announced tougher action against corruption in public hospitals, warning that bribery, “middlemen” and other abuse targeting patients will be pursued, according to Nyasa Times. Nyasa Times reports the ACB directive was issued in a press release dated March 3, 2026 and signed by Acting Director General Gabriel Gift Chembezi, and it instructs Institutional Integrity Committees in central hospitals and district councils to strengthen corruption risk assessments, expand ethics and integrity training, and introduce patient and guardian feedback mechanisms within six months.

Nyasa Times reports the ACB also wants greater digitisation of hospital systems to reduce manipulation, and has called for stricter identification controls, including uniforms, name tags and duty rosters, to deter “dobadobas” allegedly posing as health workers to solicit bribes. The bureau plans closer monitoring of service delivery through surveillance operations, spot checks and process mapping, and urged the public to report suspected corruption through the ACB toll-free line 113 or the government toll-free line 332, according to Nyasa Times.
