Malawi has voted in favour of a United Nations General Assembly resolution endorsing the International Court of Justice advisory opinion on the obligations of states to combat climate change. According to AfricaBrief, the vote signals the country's commitment to climate justice and state accountability on the global stage.

A Malawi-based project targeting deforestation and energy poverty has been awarded a $25,000 prize in the 2026 Elsevier Foundation Chemistry for Climate Action Challenge. PR Newswire reports that Milemo Lusambya, founder of the Let's Be Transformed initiative at the Dzaleka Refugee Camp, was recognised for a biomass processing programme that turns waste into sustainable energy for the community.

In a local effort to reduce deforestation, young people in Nkhotakota district's Chiwaula village have abandoned charcoal production to manufacture eco-friendly briquettes from agricultural waste. AfricaBrief notes that the Chiwaula Youth Club, supported by the Youth Action for Green Agro-enterprise project, has established a profitable market for the cleaner alternative. To further protect local forests, village leaders have introduced bylaws requiring households to plant at least 100 trees annually and established penalties for illegal cutting.

To address the growing need for environmental risk management, the World Bank has partnered with Malawian institutions to build local capacity in environmental and social safeguards. A recent World Bank report highlights that 18 lecturers from six local universities and officials from the Malawi Environmental Protection Authority recently completed an intensive training programme in Environmental and Social Impact Assessment. The initiative is designed to improve safety and environmental monitoring for future infrastructure and climate resilience projects across the country.
