The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has granted Malawi $30.9 million to enhance agricultural productivity and economic resilience, according to Nation Online. Announced by IFAD Vice-President Gérardine Mukeshimana during the African Development Bank annual meetings in the Republic of Congo, the package includes $28.7 million to cover infrastructure cost overruns and $2.2 million to support the Farm Inputs Subsidy Programme in response to global economic shocks.

In related financial developments, Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha has dismissed fears of another currency devaluation ahead of crucial International Monetary Fund (IMF) negotiations, reports Nyasa Times. An IMF mission is scheduled to visit Malawi in June to discuss a new Extended Credit Facility. The upcoming talks follow an IMF warning that global aid cuts, estimated between 16 and 28 percent for the region, are severely straining Malawi's public finances and exposing structural flaws in its donor-dependent economic model.

Update: Expanding on recent warnings of global UN funding reductions, the Malawi Government and the United Nations have conceded that fragmented implementation systems and poor coordination are hampering local development programs. According to Nation Online, UN Resident Coordinator Rebecca Adda-Dontoh announced that the organisation is pursuing internal reforms under the UN80 agenda to reduce duplication and streamline operations across ministries, aiming to better align international support with the Malawi 2063 development strategy.

Update: Building on the recent Southern African Development Community (SADC) Foreign Ministers Retreat in South Africa, Minister of Foreign Affairs George Chaponda has urged member states to reduce their reliance on foreign aid in response to growing global economic pressures, according to Channel Africa. In a separate regional development, Nation Online reports that Malawi and Zambia have agreed to establish a Joint Technical Committee to deepen tourism integration and develop cross-border marketing initiatives after bilateral discussions in Durban.
