The Government of Malawi has received a donation of 1,000 metric tonnes of rice from India to assist vulnerable households affected by severe climate shocks and food insecurity, according to Nyasa Times. Minister of Foreign Affairs George Chaponda officially received the humanitarian consignment during a handover ceremony at the National Food Reserve Agency in Lilongwe on Thursday.

Chaponda noted that erratic rainfall, floods, and El Nino weather conditions have heavily impacted agricultural output, leaving nearly four million Malawians facing food shortages, Nation Online reports. The agricultural crisis previously prompted a national State of Disaster declaration and a formal appeal for international aid across all 28 districts.

The rice consignment has been allocated to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs to support the national lean season response programme, according to Nyasa Times. Speaking at the ceremony, Chaponda commended the Indian government for the relief supplies. Meanwhile, DD News reports that the Indian Ministry of External Affairs dispatched the aid specifically to advance South-South cooperation and strengthen diplomatic ties between the two nations.
