In a move to safeguard public resources, the Malawi Treasury has launched a review of government contracts signed between September 2023 and September 2025, according to Malawi24. Secretary to the Treasury Cliff K. Chiunda issued a directive requiring all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to submit their contracts, guarantees, and addendums to the National Audit Office and the Attorney General's Office by June 20, 2026. The review specifically targets agreements that experienced cost escalations after their original signing to ensure compliance with procurement regulations. Funding for the affected projects will be withheld until the audit is complete.

Meanwhile, United Democratic Front leader Atupele Muluzi has called on citizens to reflect on the power of their vote and the responsibility of choosing the nation's leaders, Malawi Nyasa Times reports. In a social media statement, Muluzi noted that the country's future relies heavily on ballot box decisions. He shared that an unnamed prominent African leader recently made a sobering observation regarding Malawi's struggling development trajectory, adding that such remarks are necessary for the nation to confront its ongoing political and economic challenges.

Update: The government is commencing a voluntary repatriation exercise for Malawian nationals in South Africa due to ongoing anti-immigrant protests, according to Inside Politics. Following earlier diplomatic discussions regarding xenophobic threats from groups like March and March, the ministry confirmed it is providing logistical and consular support for citizens who wish to return home safely. Officials have also warned Malawians in South Africa to remain vigilant against individuals falsely claiming to represent the government's official repatriation efforts.
