Scorchers Fall to Tanzania in Friendly as Malawi Queens Name Commonwealth Games Squad

Update: Following their departure for Tanzania, the Malawi Scorchers suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Twiga Stars in an international friendly match at the KMC Complex on Wednesday, Bolanews reports. The match serves as part of the national women's football team's preparations for upcoming continental fixtures.

The Netball Association of Malawi has named a 16-player Malawi Queens squad for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, according to Nation Online. Australia-based shooter Mwawi Kumwenda returns to the national team after a year-long absence to lead the attacking lineup. General Secretary Yamikani Kauma-Khungwa stated that the squad, managed by head consultant coach Deborah Fuller, was selected following a highly competitive training camp.

In other football news, Malawian official Eness Gumbo has been selected as a Video Assistant Referee for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations. According to local sports platform Owinna, Gumbo will travel to Cairo, Egypt, to attend a preparatory course for match officials from June 25 to 30. Abroad, Flames attacker Patrick Mwaungulu provided an assist on Wednesday to help his club TP Mazembe secure a 4-1 victory over AS Simba in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Meanwhile, domestic football clubs have announced their latest monthly player rewards. Owinna reports that Mighty Wanderers new signings Alex Kambirinya and Lameck Mithi have been nominated for the team's Player of the Month award, with the winner set to receive K1.1 million worth of driving lessons at Pemba Driving School. Additionally, Red Lions players Matamando Matchipitsa, Precious Mitolo, and Mphatso Magaleta have been nominated for a K300,000 performance prize for the month of May.
