The University of Malawi (Unima) has continued its slide in the Centre for World University Rankings, dropping to 1,568th place globally for 2026, according to the Nyasa Times. The latest placement marks a decline of 179 spots over the past four years, down from 1,389th in 2023. Despite the drop, Unima remains the only Malawian institution to secure a position among the world's top 2,000 universities out of the 21,291 assessed this year.

Unima Vice-Chancellor Samson Sajidu welcomed the ranking, noting that remaining in the top 7.4 percent of universities worldwide helps maintain confidence among students and employers regarding the institution's quality of education. According to the Nyasa Times, Sajidu stated that the university will focus its investments on multidisciplinary research, curriculum reviews, and emerging technologies to improve its international standing.

The downward trajectory has prompted discussions among local experts about the state of academia in the country. Education analyst Limbani Nsapato indicated that the decline points to deeper structural challenges within Malawi's higher education sector, the Nyasa Times reports. Analysts suggest that the country must address these underlying issues to keep pace with global academic standards.
