Update: Following the recent recall of envoys, President Peter Mutharika's administration has reduced Malawi's diplomatic posts from 193 to 139. The move is expected to save taxpayers at least K7.38 billion annually in allowances and housing costs, according to AllAfrica. In tandem with the restructuring, Nation Online reports that Parliament's Public Appointments Committee is holding confirmation hearings for new ambassadors and high commissioners through June 7. International relations experts and former diplomats have urged the government to ensure the newly vetted appointees focus on securing trade and investment rather than serving as political rewards.

In regional affairs, Lilongwe is set to host the 31st Annual General Meeting of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Chiefs of Police Sub-Committee on June 11 and 12, according to SADC announcements. Chaired by Malawi Police Service Inspector General Richard Chakupaleza Chikoko Luhanga, the summit will address transnational organized crime, cybercrime, human trafficking and illicit drug networks across the region.

On the foreign investment front, a $50 million agreement signed last year with a Chinese agri-technology company to develop a 5,000-hectare agricultural industrial park in the Salima district is facing fresh scrutiny, the Mail & Guardian reports. Operating as a Special Economic Zone, the project grants the government a 30 percent equity stake. While supporters praise the deal for bringing much-needed capital and agricultural modernization to the country, critics have raised questions regarding land rights, transparency and the long-term distribution of profits.
