Update: Building on earlier reports of the University of Malawi's (UNIMA) drop in global academic rankings, education experts have raised structural concerns regarding the institution's international competitiveness, as reported by Nyasa Times. UNIMA placed 1,568th out of 21,291 institutions in the 2026 Centre for World University Rankings. While it remains the only Malawian university in the global top 2,000, it has slipped 179 places over the past four years. Vice-Chancellor Samson Sajidu welcomed the placement but noted that the university will increase investments in multidisciplinary research, curriculum reviews, and emerging technologies to improve its standing.

In school funding news, retired Standard Bank board member Alan Chinula directed a K10 million donation to Milala Primary School in Mzimba, Nyasa Times reports. The funds were provided through the bank's corporate social responsibility program to support the facility where Chinula began his early schooling.

Separately, the refugee welfare advocacy group There is Hope warned that financial constraints could force the suspension of its education and vocational training programs by the end of June, Nation Online reports. Communications coordinator Madalitso Mvula stated that the funding shortages currently threaten access to education and leadership development for hundreds of refugees.
