The Malawi government and the United Nations have agreed to continue working together on migration governance and national security, according to Malawi Cables. On June 4, Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito met with UN Resident Coordinator Rebecca Adda-Dontoh at Capital Hill in Lilongwe to discuss border control, refugee protection, and anti-smuggling efforts. Adda-Dontoh praised the government for its work in managing safe migration and promised further technical support to help enforce the Trafficking in Persons Act. Mukhito stated that the United Nations remains a reliable partner in helping the country address regional security issues.

Foreign Affairs Minister George Chaponda has expressed concern over a strict United States visa policy that is currently affecting Malawian citizens, Nyasa Times reports. Speaking at an event celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence, Chaponda noted that the restrictions follow a US presidential proclamation that introduced a partial suspension of visa issuance to Malawians earlier this year. Chaponda noted that the visa limits are creating travel barriers for students, patients requiring medical treatment abroad, and business owners looking to expand trade. He added that the heightened scrutiny raises difficult questions about the country's international credibility.

In regional news, Malawi has taken over the 2026 to 2027 chairpersonship of the Communications Regulators' Association of Southern Africa, according to Tech Africa News. The leadership change gives the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority, represented by Director General Mayamiko Nkoloma, a leading role in directing telecommunications and information technology policies across the Southern African Development Community.
