Rising Malawian music star Emmie Deebo has issued a public apology to her fellow female artists following controversial comments she made earlier this year. In a message shared on her Facebook page over the weekend, the singer expressed regret for her previous remarks, stating that some of her words were painful and disappointing. She asked her peers for a fresh start and signed the message as their "little sister," Face of Malawi reported.
The apology stems from comments Deebo made in January on the Za Nyimbo Podcast. During the appearance, she claimed she had surpassed her female counterparts and argued that she was only competing with top male artists. At the time, she boasted about her unique ability to draw large crowds in South Africa and offered a two million kwacha reward to anyone who could disprove her success. These remarks sparked mixed reactions across the country, with critics viewing them as dismissive of other female musicians.
Veteran musician Blak Jak, also known as Che Kalonda, publicly commended Deebo for the apology on Monday. According to Malawi24, the seasoned artist called the move a positive step for her career, describing her as young and futuristic. He noted that young artists sometimes get overly excited by success and reminded her that fame is easily extinguished in the entertainment industry. He encouraged her to take lessons from the experience as she moves forward in her music career.
