Malawi Advances IMF Talks and Repatriates Citizens as Lilongwe Hosts SADC Police Summit

Update: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is in accelerated discussions with Malawi regarding a new financial assistance programme, according to myRepublica. On June 6, the IMF announced it is stepping up funding for several African nations to help manage the economic fallout from global conflicts, which have disrupted supply chains and worsened food security.

Update: Malawi has successfully repatriated a first batch of 150 citizens from South Africa following recent xenophobic violence, APAnews reports. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation confirmed on June 8 that the returning nationals, who were displaced in the Mossel Bay area of the Western Cape, travelled by road through Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The group is scheduled to arrive at the Mwanza Border Post before processing at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

In regional diplomacy, Malawian officials participated in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Committee of Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General meeting in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. According to a June 8 SADC statement, member states called for the ratification of regional legal instruments to strengthen governance and uphold the rule of law. Additionally, Malawi is preparing to host the 31st annual meeting of SADC police chiefs in Lilongwe, Zimbabwe Situation reports. Homeland Security Minister Peter Mukhito will open the upcoming gathering, which will focus on combating transnational threats such as human trafficking and financial crime.
