The Malawi government has established and empowered local community groups to lead conservation efforts at Elephant Marsh, a vital southern wetland currently threatened by deforestation and agricultural expansion, Mongabay reports. The marsh serves as a critical fishing ground that directly employs more than 4,000 fishers, while thousands of others rely on processing and trading the catch to markets as far as the Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo border. Environmental researchers warn that expanding human settlements and farming are causing the wetland to shrink, placing intense pressure on the ecosystem and the local economy it sustains.
In a separate weather update, the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services has issued a national forecast projecting partly cloudy and occasionally windy conditions across most of Malawi. According to the department, these conditions will be accompanied by isolated showers, drizzle, and fog in certain areas, resulting from a cool and moist south-easterly airmass moving through the region.
