The 36th Malawi International Trade Fair has concluded at the Chichiri Trade Fair Grounds in Blantyre, drawing over 240 exhibitors. According to the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, business leaders emphasized that national economic recovery depends on utilizing such platforms to secure market contracts and generate foreign exchange. The fair produced a mix of confirmed deals and new networking opportunities, particularly for youth enterprises and agricultural cooperatives aiming to expand their operations.

In the banking sector, the European Investment Bank has announced a €15 million loan facility to Centenary Bank Limited of Malawi. The funding is designated for micro, small, and medium enterprises, with a specific focus on female borrowers and rural smallholder farmers. The European Investment Bank noted that the facility is designed to expand access to finance and support sustainable agriculture, targeting a commercial segment that contributes nearly 47 percent to the national gross domestic product.

Efforts to expand the digital economy are also progressing. The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences recently hosted the UniPod Innovation Talk Series in Blantyre, supported by the United Nations Development Programme. With Minister of Information and Digitalization Shadric Namalomba in attendance, the dialogue explored content monetization and focused on how young creators can turn their digital skills into sustainable income streams.

However, the local business environment continues to face infrastructural hurdles as the Electricity Generation Company warns of persistent power blackouts. According to Malawi24, company spokesperson Moses Gwaza disclosed that critical spare parts needed to restore a broken generation unit have faced delivery delays. The original equipment manufacturers now expect to deliver the components by the second week of June, leaving the national grid struggling with frequent load shedding.

Update: In legal developments, the recent arrest of former Chief of Staff Prince Kapondamgaga has hit a hurdle. According to Malawi24, a Senior Resident Magistrate's Court order dated June 8 suspended the execution of his arrest warrant. The court halted any arrest proceedings pending an inter-partes hearing to challenge the legality of the warrant.
