According to Malawi24, the Thyolo District Council has directed interns with expired placements to vacate their positions by the end of June to make room for new applicants. District Commissioner Noel Dakamau stated that the council currently hosts 99 interns but faces a backlog of over 100 pending applications. The directive affects personnel across various departments, including public health graduates attached to Thyolo District Hospital. One affected public health intern, Alex Maibeck, noted that while the decision is difficult for outgoing staff, it is necessary to provide other graduates with practical work experience.

In medical research, Ohio State College of Medicine associate professor Katherine E. Bline has received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar award to study pediatric tuberculosis in Malawi, according to the university's Office of International Affairs. Bline will partner with the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programme to investigate immune dysfunction in children infected with the disease and evaluate targets for new tuberculosis therapies.

A separate peer-reviewed study published this week in the journal PLOS Medicine details a machine learning approach to predict hospitalisation needs for young children with pneumonia in Malawi. The research, co-authored by scholars from Mzuzu University and several international institutions, seeks to improve clinical triage and resource allocation for treating the respiratory illness.

In other public health news, international partnerships are supporting the nation's cancer treatment infrastructure. According to a statement delivered to the International Atomic Energy Agency Board of Governors, the United States government has recently provided radiation oncology and medical physics expertise to help establish new radiotherapy centers in Malawi.
