Striker Babatunde Adepoju scored his first international goal for Malawi during the fixture. The result marks an improvement for the Flames, who suffered a 1-0 defeat to Ethiopia during their first encounter over the weekend. Head coach Kalisto Pasuwa commended the squad's response and highlighted the contributions of newly introduced players such as Chifundo Mphasi, Gaddie Chirwa, and Festus Duwe.

In domestic football, Chilobwe United secured their first victory in the NBS Bank National Division League by defeating Namitete Zitha 1-0. Maravi Express reports that the win has allowed Chilobwe United to move one step up the league standings following a challenging start to their season.

In cricket, the Malawi women's national team faced a difficult start at the 12th edition of the Kwibuka Women's T20 International Tournament in Kigali, Rwanda. According to Kawowo Sports, Nigeria secured a convincing victory over Malawi in the opening phase of the competition. The tournament runs until June 20 and features several nations, including hosts Rwanda, Brazil, and a Zimbabwe development side.

Meanwhile, in netball, the group stages of the 2026 Telkom Netball League have officially concluded in South Africa. SABC News reports that the competition, which features a regional invitational team from Malawi competing alongside South African provincial sides and a Zimbabwean team, has now advanced to the semifinal phase.
