Malawi Boosts Disease Surveillance Reporting and Launches Digital Malaria App

Wednesday, June 10, 2026

Update: Malawi has reported progress in its Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response system, according to the World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa. Through the Public Health Institute of Malawi and the Ministry of Health, the implementation of the One Health digital surveillance platform has driven reporting rates from 37.8 percent to over 80 percent across all 29 districts. The improvements were supported by the WHO and the Foreign Commonwealth Development Office, targeting low-performing districts to improve the early detection of public health threats.

In a separate development, Malawi has launched a new digital platform called MAGICapp to provide frontline healthcare workers with instant access to the latest malaria treatment guidelines, Yoneco FM reports. Developed in collaboration with the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme and partners under the EU-funded MARC SE-Africa project, the application features real-time decision aids and treatment recommendations. The Malawi National Malaria Control Programme has officially endorsed the digital tool to standardize malaria case management and reduce clinical errors nationwide.

Meanwhile, pediatric tuberculosis research in the country is set to receive international academic support. According to the Ohio State University Office of International Affairs, Dr. Katherine E. Bline has been awarded a 2026 to 2027 Fulbright U.S. Scholar award to study the disease in Malawi. Bline will partner with the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programme to investigate the cellular mechanisms and immune dysfunctions that cause severe tuberculosis in children.
