The Malawi Government has cancelled this year's State-funded Independence Day celebrations, converting the July 6 holiday into a period of national prayer, according to Malawi24. The Office of the President and Cabinet announced that President Arthur Peter Mutharika made the decision as part of ongoing austerity measures aimed at economic recovery and food security. Chief Secretary Justin Saidi stated that funds will be redirected to critical services, while the president has called for a National Thanksgiving and Supplication Programme to take place from July 3 to 5.

Update: As thousands gather in Nsipe, Ntcheu, today for the official unveiling of the Saulos Klaus Chilima mausoleum, widow Mary Chilima has publicly called for the establishment of a museum and a formal national remembrance day, according to Malawi24. The event, which marks the second anniversary of the former vice president's death in a 2024 plane crash, proceeds during ongoing political friction. Nyasa Times reports that the UTM Party officially excluded leadership from the Malawi Congress Party from the memorial, showing the deep mistrust that continues to divide the former political allies.

Update: Questions are emerging over President Mutharika's travel habits after he departed for South Africa on Friday for another private visit, Nyasa Times reports. This marks his third private trip to the neighbouring country in the past six months, drawing scrutiny from political observers as he departed without either of his vice presidents or senior government officials.
