The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and its partners are expanding the distribution of post-harvest technologies to assist smallholder farmers in adapting to climate shocks. According to Nyasa Times, AGRA Country Director Eluphy Nyirenda announced during a field visit to the Thawale Extension Planning Area in Lilongwe that the Regain Programme aims to address severe crop losses. Smallholder farmers currently lose up to 30 percent of their produce due to poor storage, inadequate drying methods, and extreme weather. The initiative provides farmers with hermetic storage bags, shellers, threshers, and tarpaulins to protect their harvests from adverse conditions.
A newly launched environmental strategy warns that plastic waste and microplastics are accumulating in Lake Malawi, threatening its aquatic habitats and more than 1,000 unique fish species. Nation Online reports that the lake accounts for 92.6 percent of Malawi's total fish catches, making it a critical resource for national food security. The strategy cautions that improper waste disposal and population pressures are endangering the region's endemic biodiversity and waterways.
Meanwhile, the government is advancing a weather radar project designed to improve national preparedness for natural disasters. According to Nation Online, the radar system will strengthen early warning capabilities for floods, cyclones, droughts, and other climate hazards that have frequently affected the country in recent years.
