Update: The Malawi government's voluntary repatriation exercise continues, with eight buses carrying 645 Malawians departing Durban, South Africa, on Monday to escape vigilante violence. According to Malawi24, the returnees are expected to enter the country through the Mwanza Border Post on Wednesday before undergoing processing at Kamuzu Stadium. To assist the displaced citizens, United Democratic Front president Atupele Muluzi has donated K5 million toward the repatriation efforts, Nyasa Times reports.

In domestic politics, Malawi Congress Party presidential running mate Vitumbiko Mumba has publicly demanded the resignation of senior Democratic Progressive Party official George Chaponda. According to Nyasa Times, Mumba released a statement on Sunday urging President Peter Mutharika to dismiss Chaponda if he refuses to step down, condemning recent public remarks made by Chaponda as divisive and allegedly targeting residents of Mzimba District.

Meanwhile, human rights advocate Undule Mwakasungula has called for an investigation into alleged political interference in the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi. Malawi Freedom Network reports that Mwakasungula expressed concern over claims that the Office of the President and Cabinet bypassed regulatory guidelines to intervene in the utility's procurement of transformers and wooden poles, warning that such actions threaten institutional independence and public trust.

Additionally, Minister of Finance Joseph Mwanamvekha has challenged civil society organizations to present viable alternatives to address Malawi's mounting economic pressures, including foreign exchange shortages and rising fuel prices. Nation Online reports that Mwanamvekha issued a formal letter to the organizations, setting a June 30 deadline for them to submit actionable recommendations rather than solely criticizing the government's economic policies.
