According to Nation Online, music composer and choral specialist Chisomo Dan Kauma released a new musical project titled "Voice of Freedom: Referendamu ya Mbiri" on June 14. The release commemorates the anniversary of the 1993 referendum in which Malawians voted to transition from single-party rule to multiparty democracy, Nation Online reports. The album blends classical choral music, operatic influences, and indigenous African musical traditions to narrate the country's political history.
Kauma explained to Nation Online that the project aims to go beyond pure entertainment by serving as a tool for civic education and historical preservation. The composer, who has previously recorded over 500 Chichewa and Tumbuka hymns, intentionally balanced traditional choral structures with other genres, Nation Online notes. The project specifically honors the ordinary citizens, political figures, and faith communities who advocated for democratic change in Malawi.
