The Ministry of Health has launched the third round of a nationwide polio vaccination campaign targeting children under the age of 10, according to Malawi Cables Online. The exercise, scheduled to run from June 16 to June 19, will utilize both door-to-door visits by trained health workers and services at government and Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) facilities. Health officials initiated this multi-phase emergency response after detecting a polio case in a child from Makhetha in Blantyre district earlier this year, aiming to halt further transmission of the virus.

Update: Building on recent initiatives to intensify Ebola border screening, Malawi has secured new international backing for its public health defenses. Nyasa Times reports that the World Health Organization (WHO) handed over K127 million in medical supplies in Lilongwe to boost the country's preparedness against potential Ebola and cholera outbreaks. WHO Country Representative Charles Kuria Njuguna stated that while the current risk of Ebola importation is classified as low, the supplies will help expand local disease surveillance, laboratory readiness, and infection prevention mechanisms.
