A new report from Auditor General Thomas Makiwa has exposed major public financial management failures. Nyasa Times reports that the audit uncovered over K158 billion in financial irregularities across various government ministries, departments, and agencies for the financial year ending March 31, 2024. Makiwa warned that several institutions failed to provide supporting documentation for audit scrutiny, raising suspicions of deliberate concealment that will require further investigation by relevant authorities.

Update: The government has launched a massive national fundraising campaign through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs to finance the repatriation of an estimated 10,000 Malawians stranded in South Africa, according to Nyasa Times. The appeal seeks financial and logistical support from the private sector and development partners to assist citizens affected by vigilante attacks. Following the appeal, Leader of the Opposition Simplex Chithyola Banda issued a statement on June 16 criticizing the administration's slow and indecisive humanitarian response. Chithyola stated that the government is failing its citizens, adding that the state of the economy and the perceived selective application of law enforcement have weakened public confidence in national institutions.

In a separate political development, Vice President Jane Ansah has broken her silence regarding months of public speculation over her alleged sidelining within the Presidency. In an interview with Luntha Television, Ansah addressed the ongoing debate surrounding her standing in the administration. While she avoided direct accusations of mistreatment, Nyasa Times reports that Ansah stated Malawians are witnessing events as they happen and will ultimately draw their own conclusions and judge for themselves.

Former President Bakili Muluzi has also weighed in on the country's current political climate, using the anniversary of the June 14, 1993, referendum to reflect on the nation's progress. According to Nyasa Times, Muluzi declared on June 17 that the fight for political freedom remains unfinished because millions of citizens are still trapped in poverty. He argued that democracy alone is insufficient without immediate economic opportunity and called for further market liberalization to address the high poverty levels.
