Malawi's maize production is expected to rebound to 3.3 million metric tonnes for the 2025/26 agricultural season, up from 2.9 million metric tonnes last year, according to a Famine Early Warning Systems Network report cited by Diplomat News Network. Despite the recovery driven by favourable rainfall, national production still falls roughly 200,000 metric tonnes short of the country's 3.5 million metric tonne annual requirement, keeping pressure on food security systems.
Update: Delays in maize procurement for the Strategic Grain Reserves continue as the National Food Reserve Agency still awaits government funding, Nyasa Times reports. NFRA Chief Executive Officer Bruce Munthali stated that the agency plans to purchase 108,000 metric tonnes of maize, comprising 86,500 metric tonnes through competitive tendering and 21,500 metric tonnes from traders. The operation remains stalled pending Treasury disbursements as the harvest season advances.
Update: In the agricultural export sector, Malawi generated MWK 223.4 billion, approximately USD 127 million, during the first eight weeks of the 2026 tobacco marketing season. According to Tobacco Commission data published by Tobacco Journal, a total of 62.1 million kilogrammes of tobacco were sold between April and June, adding to previous coverage of the crop's market performance.
