A new $50 million global climate and health initiative called Nexa launched on Sunday to fund locally led health solutions in vulnerable countries, including Malawi. According to Grand Challenges Canada, which co-leads the project with the Science for Africa Foundation, the initiative will provide financial backing to address medical risks driven by climate change. Focus areas include extreme heat, poor air quality, and mosquito-borne illnesses such as malaria and dengue. The first funding round for the program will open on June 22, targeting innovations across Africa and the Americas.

In a separate local dispute, Embangweni Mission Hospital has received a final warning from residents to surrender control of the Mhalaunda Health Centre. Malawi24 reports that the community is increasing pressure on the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian facility over its management of the clinic. Operating under the Mhalaunda Citizens Forum, locals previously accused the mission of running the community-built centre as a fee-charging private entity under the Christian Health Association of Malawi, which they argue restricts access to essential healthcare for vulnerable patients.
