Update: Experts and government officials are urging Malawi to accelerate its transition away from biomass energy to stem severe environmental losses, according to Nation Online. Speaking at a recent environmental commemoration event in Lilongwe, Ministry of Natural Resources Principal Secretary Misheck Munthali warned that environmental degradation is worsening the impact of climate-related disasters on the country's fragile economy.

This renewed call to action follows the recent launch of the National State of the Environment and Outlook Report, which revealed that environmental degradation costs Malawi nearly seven percent of its gross domestic product each year. Nation Online reports that rapid population growth, agricultural expansion, and a heavy reliance on biomass energy are the primary drivers of land degradation and deforestation threatening the country's long-term economic development plans. Officials recommend prioritizing sustainable land management and stronger environmental governance to reverse these trends.

In weather news, the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services has forecast windy and partly cloudy conditions across most areas of Malawi through June 23. The department anticipates cold nighttime temperatures with fog patches, followed by warmer afternoons driven by a cool and moist south-easterly air mass.
