Update: The Southern African Development Community convened its Extraordinary Troika Summit on June 22. Malawi's Second Vice President Enoch Kamzingeni Chihana chaired the meeting on behalf of President Arthur Peter Mutharika. According to the SADC Secretariat, regional leaders reviewed peace and security operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Madagascar. They also acknowledged the ongoing mediation work of former Malawian President Dr. Joyce Banda, who is currently serving as Head of Mission for the SADC Shuttle Diplomacy Missions to Madagascar.

In environmental and diplomatic news, the European Union and the International Organization for Migration formally detailed a new program targeting climate-induced displacement. According to the European External Action Service, Malawi is leading the regional cluster for the Regional Responses to Climate Displacement in Sub-Saharan Africa initiative. EU Ambassador to Malawi Daniel Aristi Gaztelumendi stated that the project will fund local communities and national institutions to manage displacement caused by recurrent cyclones and floods.

At the United Nations, Malawi's Permanent Mission co-hosted a formal side event during the 2026 High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS in New York. UNAIDS reports that the Malawian delegation organized the June 21 session in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme and the McSilver Institute at New York University. The international talks focused on advancing joint progress to reduce poverty and manage HIV treatment access among vulnerable populations.
