The Malawi Institute of Education has developed a new draft syllabus for Life Skills, Health and Well-being Education for upper primary schools, according to UNESCO. The curriculum reform integrates physical education, home economics, and life skills into a single learning area to address student challenges such as early pregnancies, substance abuse, and school dropouts.
In higher education, the University of Malawi (UNIMA) has officially released its selection list for the 2026/2027 Distance and e-Learning programmes, according to the university's registry. In a separate development at the institution, UNIMA students from the Department of Physics and Electronics have partnered with the Global Health Informatics Institute to develop an artificial intelligence-powered stethoscope for cardiovascular screening. The university reports that the project focuses on training students in biomedical signal processing to address national healthcare needs.
As students prepare for the upcoming Malawi School Certificate of Education exams, Maranatha Academy awarded K200,000 cash prizes to its top-performing Form 4 students and recognized teaching staff to encourage academic discipline, according to Nyasa Times. Meanwhile, Nyasa Times also reports that the Shepherd Bushiri Foundation recently paid Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB) registration fees for rural students and donated motorcycles to teachers to resolve transportation difficulties.
Efforts to upgrade school infrastructure are also advancing. The European Union Ambassador to Malawi recently inspected ongoing construction at Lumbira Community Day Secondary School in Blantyre. According to the European External Action Service, the funded project is delivering new classroom blocks, an information technology room, a library, and science laboratories to improve secondary education facilities in the country.
