The United Nations and the Malawi government have commemorated International Women's Day under the theme "Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls," urging concrete steps to address legal and political inequalities. According to a March 7 statement by the UN in Malawi, despite legal milestones such as the Gender Equality Act, female representation in the Malawian Parliament has dropped to 21 percent. This figure falls significantly short of the 50 percent benchmark set by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Protocol on Gender and Development.

During the commemorations, officials highlighted that one in three women in Malawi currently experiences gender-based violence. Nation Online reports that UN Women Deputy Country Representative Fatima Muhammad cited underfunding and cultural norms as major obstacles to achieving gender equity. Speaking ahead of the main events in Lilongwe, Deputy Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Martha Ngwira acknowledged that women remain underrepresented in leadership roles despite recent national policy reforms.

Update: As a precursor to the upcoming SADC Council of Ministers gathering, the SADC Standing Committee of Senior Officials met in Pretoria, South Africa, from March 7 to 8. According to the SADC Secretariat, the meeting focused on preparing the 2026 to 2027 regional budget and reviewing the mid-term Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan.

During the opening session, Chairperson Ambassador Tebogo Seokolo called for accelerated regional cooperation to address climate shocks, economic volatility, and low intra-regional trade, which currently stands at 23 percent. The SADC Secretariat notes that these technical deliberations will directly set the agenda for the regional ministers' meeting scheduled for March 12 to 13.
