According to the First Half 2026 Economic and Business Review released by the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, foreign exchange scarcity has worsened, affecting 88.2 percent of local firms. The Times Group reports that the shortage has forced companies to delay purchasing inputs, resulting in higher production costs and lower output. In addition, 38.2 percent of respondents cited higher tax levies as a major hurdle. Reserve Bank of Malawi senior economist Whytone Jombo acknowledged that allocating limited foreign currency reserves to essential sectors, such as fuel and pharmaceuticals, remains a difficult struggle for the central bank.

The currency challenges coincide with a weak period for the Malawi Stock Exchange. According to a second-quarter market performance report cited by The Times Group, the local market recorded a negative index return of 8.92 percent in the first half of 2026. This represents a sharp drop compared to the 13.12 percent gain recorded during the same period last year. Falling share prices among several major listed companies have prompted local investors to explore alternative sectors like agriculture, trade, and small businesses.

In an effort to diversify the economy and attract foreign direct investment, President Peter Mutharika has called for increased American private sector participation. Pan African Visions reports that the president recently reaffirmed Malawi's strategic partnership with the United States to generate new economic opportunities. On the regional front, the government is also taking steps to improve cross-border commerce. Minister of Foreign Affairs George Chaponda signed the Southern African Development Community Protocol on the Facilitation of Movement of Persons in Salima. The agreement aims to remove travel barriers to support regional trade and investment.

On the consumer finance front, mobile money usage continues to grow. Nyasa Times reports that Airtel Money awarded K5 million each to three new winners in the ninth draw of its Tola Promotion. The cash incentive scheme is designed to increase the adoption of mobile financial services among small traders and public sector workers throughout the country.
