The opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has announced a new shadow cabinet in Parliament to organize its policy responses, according to Nyasa Times. Simplex Chithyola Banda has been appointed as Leader of the Opposition to head the parliamentary team. The shadow cabinet also features Nancy Tembo as shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sam Kawale overseeing Agriculture, Edward Chileka Banda handling Education, and Moses Kunkuyu as shadow Minister of Information.
Meanwhile, a recent government prisoner release programme faced severe scrutiny in Parliament. Nyasa Times reports that Mulanje Central Member of Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa heavily criticized the Ministry of Homeland Security following the vandalism and theft of 10 boreholes in his constituency. Nankhumwa revealed that three suspects arrested in connection with the crime were among the inmates who had just been pardoned. Following the revelation, Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman demanded that the Ministry explain its reintegration measures for released prisoners.
In government business, Minister of Mining Thoko Tembo commended Portland Cement Malawi Limited for its K200 billion investment at its Balaka plant. According to Nyasa Times, Tembo toured the facility to assess its operations and described the investment as a significant step for the country's industrial growth. The Minister stated that the project supports national development through expanded local manufacturing, responsible mining practices, and job creation.
