Police in Zomba are investigating the death of Mary Hamba Nyirenda, a 23-year-old assistant lecturer at the University of Malawi. The lecturer was found dead at her home in the Zakazaka area of Zomba City on the evening of July 19, according to Malawi24. Zomba Police Station Deputy Public Relations Officer Constable Andrew Mwale stated that preliminary investigations show Nyirenda had recently complained of severe pain after a surgical wound from Banja La Mtsogolo Clinic reopened, reports Face of Malawi. Family members discovered her body after forcing open her bedroom door, and her remains have been transferred to Zomba Central Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

The university hosted a delegation from the Malawi-Scotland Partnership to explore opportunities for research funding, staff exchanges, and joint capacity building, according to a July 20 university bulletin.
