According to local media reports on July 21, President Arthur Peter Mutharika hosted former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair at Kamuzu Palace for talks aimed at attracting international investors to Malawi. Mutharika asked the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change to help secure foreign investments, particularly in the mining and energy sectors, to support the national economy. Blair praised the president's direction and committed to using his organization's global network to promote investment opportunities in the country.
In donor relations, the European Union Delegation to Malawi, alongside the Irish and German embassies, concluded a visit for the Development Cooperation and International Partnerships Working Group of the Council (CODEV-PI), the European External Action Service reported on July 20. Twenty-three delegates from 15 member states toured development programs, including a mobile health clinic and agricultural projects, and met with local authorities and businesses to evaluate the results of European funding initiatives.
On the international aid front, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Romania announced on July 21 the completion of a 70,000 euro project in Neno District, working alongside ADRA Malawi. A team of nine Romanian volunteer professionals traveled to the Matandani SDA Mission to establish the area's first permanent dental clinic, while also delivering medical care and food relief to more than 2,200 local residents.
Update: Expanding on recent international youth programs, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Malawi has opened applications for the Youth in Leadership Innovation Challenge, Menterprise Africa reported on July 20. The joint initiative with the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Culture invites district councils to submit youth-led local development solutions, offering up to $20,000 to fund successful projects.
