Update: The Malawi Police Service has arrested Noor Nasir, a businessman of Asian descent, in connection with the torture and murder of Indian national Asif Khan, according to Face of Malawi. Following emerging murder allegations, officers exhumed Khan's body on July 19, weeks after his initial burial. The case has now been committed to the High Court.
According to Nyasa Times, the Malawi Human Rights Commission has demanded a thorough investigation into the killing. The incident allegedly occurred after Khan was held captive and tortured over missing gold. While Nasir is in custody, an international manhunt is reportedly underway for at least three other suspects who have fled to Tanzania and India. Public anger continues to grow over allegations that a senior police officer accepted a MK40 million bribe to cover up the crime.
In a separate legal matter, private practice lawyer Alexious Kamangila has issued a four-week ultimatum to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to conclude a 21-month corruption probe into two judicial officers, reports Nyasa Times. In a letter dated July 21 and addressed to Chief Justice Rizine Mzikamanda, Kamangila criticized the JSC for severe delays in investigating allegations against High Court Judge Kenan Manda and Magistrate Diana Mangwana. He stated that the prolonged inaction violates constitutional provisions and damages public trust in the courts.
