Malawian courts are processing several major cases this week, including news that Finance Minister Simplex Chithyola Banda is facing court over the alleged mismanagement of public funds. According to Nyasa Times, a charge sheet dated July 16, 2026, alleges that Banda inappropriately approved K29.5 billion in extra-budgetary funding for the Greenbelt Authority to rehabilitate the Lweya Irrigation Scheme. He is scheduled to answer charges on August 7.
In a separate legal matter, the Limbe Resident Magistrate's Court has issued a warrant of arrest for Neelam Azhar Mahmood, the wife of Blantyre businessman Mahmood Azhar Chaudhry. Nyasa Times reports that the warrant follows criminal charges under Section 122 of the Penal Code for allegedly providing false information to a public officer. Mahmood is accused of falsely declaring herself a Malawian citizen to secure consent for transferring a property valued at K330 million into a family trust. The investigation was triggered by a complaint from local businessman Austin Lajabu.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Appeal has granted a citizen the right to pursue a judicial review against the Lilongwe District Commissioner, the Ministry of Local Government, and the President of Malawi. According to Nyasa Times, Justice Dingiswayo Madise issued an order allowing Sefasi Matthews Jonathan Masula to proceed with the case, overturning an earlier rejection by the High Court. Lawyer Oscar Taulo confirmed on Wednesday that the fresh application faced no objections from the state respondents and will now be heard before a new judge.
