In Mchinji, smallholder farmers are receiving a premium for their crops following the launch of the Hope Field Initiative agricultural produce market. According to Nyasa Times, Apostle Clifford Kawinga is purchasing maize from local farmers at K50,000 per 50-kilogram bag, well above the prevailing market rate of K30,000. Members of the Chisomo Farmers' Clubs have already sold 1,300 bags through the initiative, earning a combined K65 million. Malawi Cables reports that the project is part of a broader K25 billion Agriculture Investment Plan aimed at supporting rural livelihoods and equipping farmers with solar-powered irrigation systems.
Meanwhile, the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) is facing scrutiny after confirming that 70 metric tonnes of maize deteriorated at its Liwonde storage facility in Machinga District due to pest infestation. ADMARC Chief Executive Officer Ben Botolo stated that the damaged grain is unfit for human consumption and will instead be sold to livestock farmers for animal feed, according to the Malawi Freedom Network.
In response to the spoilage, the National Advocacy Platform has called for an independent forensic audit and criminal prosecutions. Nyasa Times reports that the civil society watchdog estimates the financial loss at K77 million. The organisation criticized the state grain trader for preventable storage failures during a period of national food insecurity and high maize prices.
