On Thursday, the African Export-Import Bank, through its subsidiary the Africa Trade and Distribution Company, signed an agreement to launch a national trade and distribution platform in Malawi, according to a statement from Afreximbank. The joint venture partners the continental institution with Malawi's Press Corporation Plc. The agreement was signed in Alamein, Egypt, by Press Corporation Chief Executive Officer Ronald Mangani and Africa Trade and Distribution Company Chief Operating Officer Nikhil Poonevala. The project aims to develop local trading, logistics, and distribution infrastructure to expand intra-African commerce and support Malawian exports.
In separate international law enforcement news, an alleged human trafficking ringleader was extradited from Malawi to Ethiopia on Wednesday, the Ethiopian News Agency reports. The suspect, Adnew Bashaw, was transferred to Ethiopian custody following a joint operation involving Interpol and Malawian police. Ethiopian authorities accuse Bashaw of operating a transnational smuggling network that exploited migrants through extortion and forced travel routes heading toward South Africa.
