Environmental groups in Malawi are advocating for increased climate financing and greater transparency to protect vulnerable populations, according to Nyasa Times. During a climate justice workshop held in Lilongwe on Tuesday, stakeholders stressed the importance of empowering local communities to participate actively in climate resilience efforts.
Organized by the NCA-DCA Malawi Joint Country Programme, the gathering included representatives from the Department of Environmental Affairs, faith communities, the private sector, and the media. Alfred Kambwiri of the Centre for Environmental Policy and Advocacy told attendees that communities should be equipped with the knowledge and resources to develop their own solutions, rather than only acting as passive beneficiaries, Nyasa Times reports.
Participants also focused on the need for accessible funding and international cooperation. Tadala Chumachiyenda of NCA-DCA Malawi stated that public awareness is essential for holding institutions accountable for how climate finance is generated and used. While acknowledging that Malawi has made some progress in securing climate funds, Tarcizio Kalaundi of Trocaire Malawi added that stronger partnerships are necessary to ensure resources reach the most affected communities equitably, according to Nyasa Times.
