The leadership race for the National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives (NONM) is advancing ahead of the upcoming November elections. On August 27, veteran nurse George Nkhoma and former NONM Executive Director Benson Edwinson Phiri officially submitted their nomination papers, according to Nyasa Times and Mibawa News. Phiri presented his nomination at the NONM Secretariat in Lilongwe, as reported by Mibawa TV, while Nkhoma submitted his papers in Blantyre, Zodiak Online reports. Nkhoma stated his platform includes delegating decision-making to district chapters and launching an annual welfare campaign to negotiate for salary adjustments and better working conditions. Phiri told Mibawa News his campaign will focus on protecting labour rights and ensuring that nurses and midwives receive adequate resources.
In other public health developments, the Malawi Environmental Health Association convened its Annual General Meeting and Conference in Salima on August 27. First Lady Gertrude Mutharika attended the official opening. During the event, participants were encouraged to explore private-sector entrepreneurship to improve national health outcomes, according to Kennedy Nduna, a Zambian entrepreneur and patron of the Zambia Institute of Environmental Health Women's Chapter.
Additionally, Last Mile Health, a medical organization operating in Malawi, Liberia, Ethiopia, and Sierra Leone, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize, Angels in Medicine reports. The organization will receive 3 million dollars to support its work training and paying community health workers. Last Mile Health currently supports over 20,000 frontline health workers serving 32 million people across the four nations. The prize money will be used to expand healthcare delivery and support ongoing medical programs, according to Angels in Medicine.
