Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor George Partridge has urged financial institutions to adopt responsible lending practices following the launch of Old Mutual Finance Limited in Lilongwe on August 28, according to the central bank. Partridge emphasized that financial services must improve livelihoods rather than place consumers under financial strain, calling for complete transparency regarding fees, pricing, and repayment terms. Old Mutual Group Board Chairperson Nkondola Uka stated that the new non-deposit-taking microfinance institution represents the company's expansion into accessible credit and digital lending.
In economic development news, Malawi is currently hosting a $198 million unconditional direct cash transfer trial run by the non-governmental organization GiveDirectly, as reported by Bloomberg and The Japan Times on August 27. The program is distributing roughly $700, approximately 1.2 million kwacha, to 230,000 adults across two southern districts. The initiative aims to determine whether direct, unconditional capital can successfully empower residents to launch small businesses, stimulate local economic activity, and reduce long-term reliance on traditional foreign aid.
Meanwhile, the domestic banking sector has expanded its premium services with the introduction of the NBS Visa Infinite Card, according to MBC Digital and Times 360 Malawi. Launched in partnership with Visa on August 26, the new payment card targets high-net-worth clients with exclusive travel and security privileges. NBS Bank Chief Executive Officer Temwani Simwaka noted that the product aligns with the institution's ongoing efforts to provide modern, globally accessible payment solutions for Malawian customers.
