Nation Online notes that Senior Counsel Kamudoni Nyasulu is challenging the appointment and requesting a stay of proceedings on cases Maele has discontinued since taking office. Represented by former Attorney General Chikosa Silungwe, Nyasulu argues that President Arthur Peter Mutharika appointed Maele in November 2025 while the previous Director of Public Prosecutions, Masauko Chamkakala, still had an active tenure running until December 2027. Judge Anneline Kanthambi deferred the ruling, notifying the parties that the judgment was not yet ready and a new date would be set.

The United Nations agency indicated in its August country brief that it currently faces a $17 million funding shortfall for this specific operation.
