Update: The Reserve Bank of Malawi is urging the financial services sector to expand formal credit access to underserved populations. Nyasa Times reports that during the August 31 launch of Old Mutual Finance Limited, RBM Governor George Partridge warned that large segments of the public remain excluded from the banking system. He noted that while digital lending is growing across the country, financial institutions must maintain strict governance and customer protection standards to ensure long-term economic inclusion.

In the green energy and manufacturing sectors, Malawi is expanding its climate initiatives through local clean cooking production supported by carbon finance. Africa Sustainability Matters reported on August 31 that government officials recently toured BURN Manufacturing in Blantyre to assess the economic and environmental impacts of the project. The facility has distributed more than 166,000 fuel-saving stoves and created 400 local jobs, supporting national targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 51 percent by 2040.

Update: Electricity supply challenges continue to strain the national economy, with the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi announcing on August 30 that ongoing power blackouts will intensify. Nation Online reports that the national grid is facing a fresh 42-megawatt generation shortfall, dropping available capacity to 347 megawatts against a peak demand of 430 megawatts. The deficit stems from a major equipment failure at Egenco's Nkula B Unit 6 and restricted output at Nkula A. ESCOM expects the generation gap to persist until replacement parts are shipped from South Africa and installed in early October.
