Household borrowing in Malawi has jumped to K1 trillion as consumers rely on credit to cope with the rising cost of living, according to a September 2 report by Nation Online. Reserve Bank of Malawi data showed that loans to individuals and households increased by K333.7 billion last year, overtaking commercial and industrial loans, which stood at K780.4 billion. National Planning Commission officials warned that the sharp rise in personal lending, fueled by an inflation rate of 21.1 percent and high borrowing costs, could worsen the country's foreign exchange crisis and drive demand-pull inflation if funds are spent on imported consumables rather than productive investments.
National Bank of Malawi plc announced a half-year profit after tax of K133.97 billion for the period from January to June 2026, Nyasa Times reported on September 2. This represents a 59 percent increase from the previous year, supported by a 32 percent rise in customer deposits and a 21 percent expansion of the bank's loan book. The bank noted in its financial statement that while improved harvest supplies eased food inflation to 14.7 percent, non-food inflation spiked to 32.1 percent due to elevated fuel, utility, and transport costs linked to informal market exchange rates.
Meanwhile, the Malawi government is seeking a $2.4 billion, or approximately K4 trillion, investment from the private sector and development partners to establish commercial mega-farms across 470,000 hectares of irrigable land. As reported by Nation Online and Nyasa Times this week, Minister of Agriculture Roza Fatch Mbilizi presented the investment pitch at the 2026 Africa Food Systems Forum in Kigali, Rwanda. The agricultural development plan targets key value chains including maize, groundnuts, rice, and soybean to improve food security, increase export earnings, and create nearly 400,000 direct jobs.
