Update: Former Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) Chief Executive Officer Collins Magalasi has been charged at the Lilongwe Magistrate's Court in a cyber intrusion case involving President Peter Mutharika. According to Pan African Visions, prosecutors charged Magalasi under the Electronic and Cyber Security Act for allegedly hacking the phone numbers of the President and several senior government figures between June and August 2026. The court heard that Magalasi and co-accused Lovemore Chikoma also targeted Homeland Security Minister Peter Mukhito and Inspector General of Police Richard Luhanga.
In Blantyre, the High Court has nullified the appointment of Chrissy Kamwachale as the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi, Nyasa Times reports. Judge Edna Bodole declared President Peter Mutharika's April 2026 appointment "void ab initio," ruling that Kamwachale lacked the required qualifications for the job. The court issued a permanent injunction restraining the implementation of the appointment after the state failed to file a defence in the judicial review case.
Police in Karonga have arrested 36-year-old Chinese national Yekai Liao on suspicion of running an unlicensed online business, according to Nyasa Times. Following a tip-off, officers raided a local lodge and discovered a network of 20 desktop computers and internet routers. Police stated that Liao employed nine Malawians and two Nigerians working overnight shifts but failed to provide a satisfactory explanation of the commercial activities.
Update: In the ongoing National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) fraud probe, the Malawi Police Service has arrested Deputy Chief Executive Officer Miklas Reuben and Senior Operations Manager Thokozani Jacob Sesani. AllAfrica reports the pair allegedly transferred over $400,000 to a Mozambican company under the false pretence of clearing fuel shipment charges. In other law enforcement news, Face of Malawi reports that the First Grade Magistrate Court in Limbe convicted 52 individuals following an intelligence-led police crackdown. Furthermore, the United Nations Development Programme announced a new partnership with the Malawi University of Science and Technology on September 1 to train police officers in digital forensics to investigate technology-enabled crimes.
